Product details
The macadamia nut tree, scientifically known as *Macadamia integrifolia* or *Macadamia tetraphylla*, is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to Australia, particularly thriving in the subtropical rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. It is widely cultivated for its hard-shelled nuts, which are prized for their rich, buttery flavor and high oil content. Appearance and Growth: Macadamia trees typically grow to heights of 20 to 40 feet, with dense, glossy, dark green leaves that are leathery and elongated, growing in clusters. Depending on the variety, the leaves may have smooth or serrated edges, and the tree develops a rounded crown as it matures. The bark is rough and gray, giving the trunk a gnarled appearance over time. This tree can thrive for many years and often begins producing nuts around 7-10 years of age. Flowering and Pollination: In the spring, the macadamia tree produces long, drooping racemes of delicate white or pinkish flowers. These racemes can be up to 12 inches long and contain dozens of tiny, fragrant flowers that attract pollinators like bees. Pollination is critical for nut production, with wind and insects playing a role in transferring pollen from flower to flower. Fruit (Nut) Development: After pollination, the tree produces fruit that encases the valuable macadamia nuts. The fruit starts as a green husk, which thickens and matures over several months. Inside this tough outer layer lies the macadamia nut, protected by an incredibly hard, round shell.
